This mouse made the move from a PC to a Mac with me, but the only reason I use it is because of the right click feature. The left click button always double clicks unless you touch just the right spot. It’s also really small. I wouldn’t recommend it unless you want to double click on EVERYTHING and be really annoyed.

I bought one of these about six months ago to replace a venerable third-party corded optical mouse that had shipped with my previous laptop and finally ceased functioning after several years of daily use, such that the coloring on the case was worn away in several places. I thought the retractable cord feature would be useful, though I found the thinness of the cord a bit disturbing; the fabric bag it came with looked useful until I realized it was too short to actually contain the entire unit with the cord retracted. Nevertheless, I bought it. Within three months, it ceased functioning. I was annoyed, but Staples didn’t have anything better, so I got another one. Tonight, it too is failing in the same fashion – it functions intermittently, but can sometimes be coaxed into working for a while by fiddling with the visibly worn junction point between the mouse body and the cord. It has not been subjected to abuse or anything more rigorous than simply being carried in a backpack, unfurled and retracted, and used several times per day. The damage to the connection between the cord and the USB device should be surprising, but isn’t; I’ve had two laptop cooling mats, one also from Targus, break in a similar fashion due to the stresses put on the power jack by normal usage, due to an extremely weak construction for that connection. Do ALL portable USB peripherals have this flaw?!

While its performance is otherwise quite satisfactory, the mechanical weakness of the cord connection is, in my opinion, an inexcusable engineering flaw for a device intended to be portable – while, as practicing technician and an engineer in training myself, I’m aware that devices cannot be made indestructible, a product like this should not break after three months of normal, as-intended use! Bottom line, this is a decent mouse, but if you’re planning to use it for its intended function as a peripheral mouse to reside in your backpack or laptop bag while traveling, buy something more robust – the cord connection is analogous to making the transmission for a 4×4 out of balsa wood.
